Empowering Oyingbo market women in Nigeria

This cohousing scheme is based in Lagos Nigeria, where it aims to empower displaced Oyingbo market women who have fallen victim to market regeneration because of social marginalisation. Unfortunately, COVID-19 further exacerbated existing social, political, and economic issues. Therefore, we hope to eliminate these problems by creating a new approach to market complexes, where these women and their families can both live and trade. Giving them a sense of belonging, celebrating their culture, while allowing them to practice their craft.

Adaptable Store

To give these women and their families privacy, a series of residential dwellings served by communal living spaces and open-air laundry spaces are provided on upper levels. While the ground floor public journey is addressed by modular shops which can be appropriated to fit the individual’s needs. Moreover, the proposal provides a nursery for their children, a clinic for the elderly and a multi-purpose hall for community gatherings and prayers.

View through to the market

In order to allow affordability, the proposal is designed to be low-tech and environmentally conscious, where we have adapted the use of rammed earth to improve thermal comfort within tropical climate, and adopted natural ventilation to reduce costs.
