Making Ends Meat: Rethinking the family meal

“The commodification of daily life and social reproduction has created a complex space for anticapitalist struggle”

Anti-capitalist solutions to problems faced in domestic life are generally unviable ones. Instead, we want to provide community-powered alternatives to unhealthy and unethical consumerist habits that can ease the burdens that families face in terms of food poverty, poor diets, and impending ecological collapse.

This will be through a market and kitchen that supports ethical market and non-market transactions such as Fairtrade, workers cooperatives, and local producers, which will be subsidised by the profits of a new low carbon food production facility on site.

By combining low carbon and ethical production of meat alternatives on site with this market and kitchen we can combat the domestic issues of poor diets, stretched budgets, and unethical consumerism, and educate families about these issues that supermarkets and global food supply chains facilitate.

The landscaping followings a Permaculture strategy, where the diversity of land use is combined with human and natural resources to make the most of the site. The site is split into zones of varying productivity and management, to produce a diverse land use strategy that combines managed spaces for growing produce, providing spaces for wildlife to flourish, promoting biodiversity, and helping to ease the local drainage strategy.

An educational route through the site transforms it into a living exhibition and experiment into the future of the family meal. Threading through all the processes that take place on site, it allows the visitor to access and learn about how everything on-site is done, from where their food comes from, to their own power as a consumer, and how they can shop and eat healthily and ethically.
