Skill sharing self-build workshops within a De-growth economy

The project is an alternative way of approaching housing developments in contrast to the capitalist model that results from technologies put in place to accelerate the growth of its own geographical and economic landscape. The situation can contribute to the unfair distribution of resources. This issue can be addressed by focusing on the e-growth economy which prioritizes well-being of population as opposed to corporate benefits.

After researching various actors and highlighting individual needs and aspiration, the main issue each of the actors faced was the lack of both permanent housing and opportunity. By embracing both the ideologies behind the de-growth movement and the distribution of people, skills and opportunity, a programme was developed that would help achieve all of these aims.

The housing program aims to allow those without permanent housing to visit the masterplan and work on the construction and design of modular homes. In return these workers will be entitled to their own modular and permanent home. These modular houses will be distributed around the outer skirts of Manchester creating new communities.

As these new communities grow, they will help ease the social pressure on certain areas that are currently densely populated that’s have created their own pockets of poverty. The new communities will offer people permanent spaces as well as new opportunities. It will allow for different cultures and skills to spread out across a wider space.

The main programme is supported by spaces that allowed for the distribution of aid and skills: the administration centre, health centre, vertical farm and community kitchen, workshop spaces, educational spaces, and exhibition area.
